Every year on February 2nd, the nation turns its eyes to a small hill in Pennsylvania. And every year, Texans politely ask, "But what does the armadillo think?"
This morning, Punxsutawney Phil reportedly saw his shadow, dooming the north to six more weeks of winter. But down here in the Hill Country, we know that rodents don't dictate Texas weather. That job belongs to Bee Cave Bob, the Benevolent Knight of the Raccoon and the official meteorologist of the "West Pole" (located right here in Bee Cave, Texas).
Bob is a bit of a contrarian. Historically, he has often disagreed with his northern rival, offering hope for an early spring when others predict doom and gloom.
Crowds gathered at the West Pole this afternoon to watch Bob’s handler, Ralph Fisher, place him in the prediction pen. The rules of Armadillo Day are simple: if Bob stays out and explores the pen, spring is around the corner. If he gets spooked and retreats to his burrow (or "darkness"), we’re in for a long winter.
Good news, Texas! Bob wants nothing to do with Phil’s negativity. Upon entering the ring, Bob immediately began exploring his pen, wandering comfortably around the perimeter.
This behavior is the official sign of an Early Spring! While the rest of the country bundles up, get your bluebonnet cameras ready—warm weather is on the way.
